Ever spent a long time on creating a video, only to freeze before clicking “Publish”?
Last week, I received a call with a lady.
She’s 40 years old, a mother of two, a wife, and has a fitness business.
She reached out to me and said, “Lucas, I have been trying to do videos for years. But I’m struggling. I can record them. But when it comes to hitting ‘publish’ or hitting ‘upload’, I freeze.”
She continues…
“It’s really frustrating because I know my stuff. I know my material. I know I’m very good at what I do. And with two young kids, I know that I need to start scaling my time. I need to get out there more. And I’m already overrun with obligations. How can I move forward? How can I take action?”
Sensing that this behavior had been going on for a while, I ask her “What made you reach out though? Because this doesn’t seem like it’s a new situation.“
She replies, “Last week, a client came and asked me, “When do you have your video series coming out?” and I told her, “Oh, I’m almost done. I’m still working on it.”
“Here’s the thing Lucas. I’ve been telling people I’m working on it for the last two years. I’m sick and tired of saying this all the time.”
Fear. Anxiety. Insecurities. Perfectionism.
Whatever it is, the hesitation to click “publish” or “share” after spending a long time creating something is common amongst entrepreneurs.
Sound familiar?
Why Video Is So Important For Marketing
According to Cisco, 82% of all global internet consumption will be video content by 2020.
So there’s no question that video is taking over the Internet.
In today’s world, exposure is everything.
If people don’t know who you are, they can’t find you.
And in today’s world where eight out of ten 18-49 year-olds watch YouTube, if you’re not leaping into the world of video, you’re going to be left behind.
However, it’s not just a matter of keeping up with the rest of the world.
There are benefits for you as an entrepreneur too. For example:
- Videos on landing pages can increase conversions by 80% according to EyeViewDigital.com
- Marketers who use video content get 66% more qualified leads per year according to Aberdeen Group
So as you can see, for entrepreneurs wanting to get their message out, publishing video is no longer a luxury. It’s a necessity.
On top of that, speaking to your audience, whether via video or in person, is the easiest way to share your message and attract your ideal clients.
So when the lady mentioned in the example above signed up with me, I became very excited to work with her.
Because when she’s in our training room, and it’s just her, the camera and me. And she’s going to get it done.
She’s going to record her videos. She’s going to hit upload. And she’s going to put them out there.
The Root Of All Your Social Media Posting Fears
As I work with this lady to push her boundaries, all her fears posting on social media are going to come up.
This is why I love public speaking.
Apart from the business benefits, public speaking is the perfect medium for overcoming your fears of posting on social media.
Why?
Because public speaking showcases all of a person’s individual fears – all their insecurities and anxieties.
Now, you might be thinking, “Oh, that sounds horrible. I don’t want to do that.”
But here’s the thing – it’s happening all the time.
Your fears, insecurities, and anxieties are always being expressed.
It just happens to be at a lower level.
And you may not be aware of it.
Maybe you aren’t assertive. Maybe you don’t say what you really want to say. Maybe you keep giving in. Maybe you’re a people pleaser, bending over backward for others, slowly building anger and resentment.
When it’s happening at a lower level, it’s less noticeable.
And that means it’s harder to address.
When it comes up in public speaking however, it’s all going to be on display.
And that’s why when we deal with it, you’ll have access to more freedom and power in your life.
And instead of missing opportunities and regretting them, you start succeeding.
Instead of shying away from publishing, you help your business tremendously through exposure.
The ‘Dog Sh*t Day’ Technique
In my public speaking workshops, my clients go through a process called “dog shit days”.
The idea is you deliberately put up lower quality videos in order to overcome your perfectionism.
The goal is to help you learn how to give yourself permission to not be perfect.
To practice hitting upload even if you’re not ‘ready yet’.
Don’t worry – it’s not all public though.
We do that with unlisted videos to get those reps in so you slowly become more comfortable with the process.
But if you’re a one-percenter, you can go straight for gold and publish in public.
At the end of the day, the one thing I want to help you avoid is letting opportunities pass you by.
Because you’re only going to get more and more regretful as time passes on.
And I don’t want that to happen to you.
You have so much value to offer the world.
This is your time.
So let’s do it.
Let’s record videos. And let’s start hitting publish.
