While it may sound difficult to believe, but it’s true, being nervous before speaking in public is great for you…let me explain.
What are nerves? There’s a huge surge in energy that is present before public speaking, because let’s face it, there’s a lot of people staring at you. The biggest shift that you can have with public speaking is how you interpret energy because the choice is really yours, is it excitement or nervousness? In my opinion, they are two sides of the same coin and you control how it’s interpreted.
How To Control Your Nerves
1. View the audience as an ally, they are there to support you and want you to succeed. If you completely bomb your presentation, they’ve wasted their time and they don’t want that.
2. Every success you’ve had has resulted from you pushing your comfort zone, this is no different, so appreciate nerves as a signal that you’re moving forward.
3. Focus on your breathing. There will be a tendency to take shallow breaths from your chest, ignore this and focus on breathing slowly using your diaphragm
4. Have fun 🙂 This isn’t a life or death situation and any “mistakes” you make are really opportunities to refine your presentation for future success.
